Now's The Time To Expand Your IT Support Network

Posted on: 28 April 2020

With everyone working from home when possible, the landscape of the commercial IT support services world has changed drastically. People need the same access and speed to connect to work servers, yet they have to do it from home internet setups that vary widely in terms of upgrades and capacity. Given that working from home looks to be one of the new-normal changes in society, your IT support department needs to be ready to help at a moment's notice. And you need to be sure that the department can handle everything thrown its way.

Demand on Servers and Connections

First, the demand on your servers and on stable connections is now huge compared to where it was before. Instead of a couple of offices with ethernet connections for every computer, now you have people logging in from several different locations using several different ISPs using several different generations and brands of computer and router. There's bound to be bottlenecks and incompatibilities in there, as well as the fact that now there's demand at times when there wasn't demand before. You need IT support people available 24 hours each day, really (unless you set a company policy of access between certain hours only).

Software Training

One of the funnier revelations of the lockdowns has been that new software can baffle even the best employees. As more software comes on the market to help companies that have switched to working from home, your employees are going to need more and more help to ensure smooth transitions. This means having more IT support people available, whether you hire them directly or contract with a company. With more support, you'll be able to set up more training and troubleshooting sessions to help your employees get the hang of all the new software and systems.

Expansion of At-Home Work

Even after the lockdowns end, companies may continue to have people work from home. Already there are signs in the commercial real estate market of companies ditching huge communal office spaces and just having a smaller space for core operations with an army of at-home workers. As that infrastructure changes and grows, you'll need more people able to keep the connections in good shape.

Society is at a turning point, where the very location and style of work is now in question. Be ready for anything by ensuring you have enough IT support to see you through all of the changes.
