Outsourced Or In-House: How Do You Decide To Manage Your IT Services?

Posted on: 16 May 2017

Who is your IT managed service provider? Maybe you have an in-house IT managed service provider instead? If you do not have either, how do you manage your IT services at all? After spending a few moments reflecting on these questions, you should probably get started on finding somebody to manage your IT services. If you cannot decide whether to outsource this job to a company that specializes in IT managed services or hire someone to manage things in-house, here are some important differences to consider.

Managing IT Services in-House

IT professionals who are trained, certified and/or have degrees in IT service management can be hired to manage these things in the same building where you work and your company operates on a day-to-day basis. This is actually a very convenient means of managing IT services, since the person or persons working for your company can provide you with regular updates on how your IT services are doing. Additionally, if anything suddenly goes wrong with your IT services, your in-house IT services manager can begin to fix the problem right away, rather than waiting for an outsourced IT managed service provider to send a technician to fix the problem.

Outsourced Managed IT Services

When you select, hire and outsource your managed IT services, you get someone who is on the inside track with a provider. This technician knows that the services that the provider provides and for which the manager manages have their little ups and downs. He or she knows when the provider is going to launch software updates, how to patch updates that have system-wide bugs and how to correct dozens of other issues as they relate to the provider and not just on the receiving end of things.

While you may have to wait to have repairs completed, some repairs can be completed remotely. Other repairs have to be completed onsite in your data centers or with your computer and phone systems. At least, with an outsourced services manager, the repair technician arrives fully stocked with wires, cables, and tools to make sure the job is done right and completely finished.

Payment for Services Rendered

What value can you place on an IT service manager's services? Well, if you have in-house IT staff, the cost is whatever you are willing to pay your employee(s) or what the going rate for such professionals currently is. As for outsourced IT service managers and providers of said services, it is whatever their company charges for these services or what they charge for a package of services.
